Fox rejects John 3:16 Super Bowl ad (Catholic Online)

Fox rejects John 3:16 Super Bowl ad, considers it controversial

For a company that bills itself as 'fair and balanced,' Fox's actions seem to tip the scale in one definitive direction.

There are no preachers or ministers in the ad, no church or even a cross. The ad shows sports fans wondering aloud what the phrase "John 3:16" painted on a football player's eye black could mean, followed by a simple response: look it up.

BIRMINGHAM, AL (Catholic Online) - Millions of dollars are made every year off the sale of 30-second Super Bowl commercial slots. These ads are frequently out-of-the-ordinary, hilarious, controversial or even downright depraved. This year, however, Fox Sports has labeled one seemingly innocuous Super Bowl ad as "religious doctrine" and much too offensive to be aired.

The commercial refers to the Bible verse, John 3:16, for less than 2 seconds, painted on a football player's eye black.

What indoctrinating language or insulting image could be depicted in this ad? None. This ad is banned simply because the commonly repeated Bible verse, John 3:16, is its premise. There are no preachers or ministers in the ad, no church or even a cross. The 30-second spot shows sports fans wondering aloud what the phrase "John 3:16" painted on a football player's eye black could mean, followed by a simple response: look it up. The viewer is then shown the Web address www.lookup316.com.

Many football players have written notes on the black smudges under their eyes, originally meant to block the glare of sunlight off of sweaty faces. Sometimes the eye blacks bear team logos, short notes to loved ones or, in the most recognizable case of University of Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow, Bible verses.

John 3:16 contains the core of Christian faith: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

Someone who is unfamiliar with the Bible verse may not even understand the reference. Those that are familiar with it may or may not choose to visit the website, but no one is informed of its meaning during the commercial. However, Fox Sports has decided that the mere existence of this phrase is enough to warrant banning the ad from the Super Bowl.

The John 3:16 commercial was produced by Fixed Point, a religious advocacy group based in Birmingham, Alabama. The group was set to pay about $3 million to have the ad aired on Fox Sports during the Super Bowl this Sunday, which will reach over 100 million viewers.

Religious leaders have expressed disappointment and confusion, especially since Fox commercials tend to be riddled with profanity and offensive images. Ads in the past have shown men kissing each other and scantily-clad women, among other sexually suggestive imagery.

However, the message of John 3:16 will get to the public regardless of Fox's views. Since the ban, Fixed Point has purchased local TV commercial spots in Alabama. The commercial will not air in other states, but is circulating quickly over the internet.

For a company that bills itself as "fair and balanced," Fox's actions seem to tip the scale in one definitive direction.

Testimony of a Woman who Underwent Abortion

http://www.lovematters.com/women.htm

"Two weeks after the abortion, I went into labor. I staggered into the bathroom. And there, with my husband beside me, I delivered a part of my baby the doctor had missed. It was the head of my baby..." "I'll wake up in the middle of the night, thinking I hear a baby crying. And I still have nightmares in which I am forced to watch my baby being ripped apart in front of me. I simply miss my baby. I constantly wake up wanting to nurse my child, wanting to hold my child. And that's something the doctor never told me I would experience."

Charismatic Convention + Rex Band Concert in Mumbai

On November 8th Thursday - 11th Sunday, 4:30 pm to 10:00 pm, at Tilak Nagar Municipal Ground, Chembur. Rex Band Concert on the 11th

This festival season is all set to be one full of blessings from above. The Diocese of Kalyan is organizing a four day Charismatic Convention this November from 8th to 11th at Tilak Nagar Municipal Ground, Chembur. The Preaching of the Word of God and Healing Services will be led by eminent preachers Fr. Kurian Puramadathil & his team and by Fr. Jose Vettiyankal VC. Their services will be on 3 days i.e. 8th, 9th and 10th from 4:30 pm to 10:00 pm, in Malayalam. The summary of each seesion will be given in English at the end of it. On 11th, there will be a Gospel Music Ministry conducted by Rex Band, a music & audio visual outreach ministry of Jesus Youth Movement. As a conclusion of the Year of the Children and the Youth (YCY), this programme is done very specially keeping in mind of the youth and the children.

Almost every year, the Diocese of Kalyan conducts Charismatic Convention during the Diwali holidays, which are attended by thousands of people. I have attended at least 4 of them, and have witnessed lives being changed when people hear the Word of God and get touched by the Unlimited Love of God. Many receive healings in body, mind and spirit.

I was drawn to Jesus Christ personally through the Jesus Youth movement. Ever since I started attending programmes and prayer groups conducted by them, I have experienced moments of deep intimacy with God and received immense love, healing, assurance, hope and faith in Jesus Christ, whom I can declare before anyone as my only Savior and Lord.

One of the attractions of Jesus Youth programmes in always the music ministry led by the Rex Band. They are a highly motivated group of people who have committed their lives entirely to God. They use their talents for the glory of God alone. Their services have made a profound impact on the lives of many people, especially the young people. Their programmes include worship music, skits, theatre art and so on.

I recommend everyone in Mumbai to go and attend the Convention, and especially the Rex Band Concert (it's in English), for I can assure you that it can change your life completely. We come across a million opportunities in life. But it will make any difference to you only if you make use of them.

God bless you!!!

Cardinal Supports Proposed "Improvement" of Abortion Law

But Affirms Sacredness of All Human Life

LONDON, OCT. 28, 2007 (Zenit.org).- As British Parliament considers lowering the age limit for abortions, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor weighed in, supporting any vote that ushers in what he called incremental improvements to an unjust law.

Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor, archbishop of Westminster, noted his support for a lowering of the age limit in a statement published today by the Telegraph newspaper.

The Abortion Act of 1967 originally set at 28 weeks the legal limit for abortions. Then, in 1990, Parliament agreed to lower the time limit to 24 weeks. An inquiry into the age limits commenced Oct. 15 by the House of Commons committee on science and technology. Improvements in survival rates for babies born prematurely have led to pressure for the limit to be lowered.

Read more on the article here: http://www.zenit.org/article-20856?l=english

I loved the way the article ends.

"The Catholic Church does not oppose abortion because it opposes human progress or fails to understand the struggles and difficulties that people have to cope with," he said. "How could the Church not believe in humanity when its whole faith is cantered on God becoming human? The Church's 'no' to abortion is simply the reflection of its unconditional 'yes' to all human life, its 'yes' to a society in which the innocent and vulnerable growing life in the womb is cherished and protected. A society that protects all its children, especially the fragile child in the womb, is a society in which we can all feel at home.

If abortion is to become a thing of the past, it will not be because the Catholic Church has succeeded in imposing its views on anyone. It will be because people, of their own volition, have come to see that there is a better way. This gives me reason for hope. We can say 'yes' to life."

Pope is visiting Turkey today!!!

SPIRITUAL PILGRIMAGE WITH HIS HOLINESS POPE BENEDICT XVI ON HIS PASTORAL VISIT TO TURKEY

NOV. 28 – DEC. 1, 2006

Heavenly Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name, we humbly ask that you sustain, inspire, and protect your servant, Pope Benedict XVI, as he goes on pilgrimage to Turkey – a land to which St. Paul brought the Gospel of your Son; a land where once the Mother of your Son, the Seat of Wisdom, dwelt; a land where faith in your Son’s true divinity was definitively professed. Bless our Holy Father, who comes as a messenger of truth and love to all people of faith and good will dwelling in this land so rich in history. In the power of the Holy Spirit, may this visit of the Holy Father bring about deeper ties of understanding, cooperation, and peace among Roman Catholics, the Orthodox, and those who profess Islam. May the prayers and events of these historic days greatly contribute both to greater accord among those who worship you, the living and true God, and also to peace in our world so often torn apart by war and sectarian violence. We also ask, O Heavenly Father, that you watch over and protect Pope Benedict and entrust him to the loving care of Mary, under the title of Our Lady of Fatima, a title cherished both by Catholics and Muslims. Through her prayers and maternal love, may Pope Benedict be kept safe from all harm as he prays, bears witness to the Gospel, and invites all peoples to a dialogue of faith, reason, and love. We make our prayer through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Prayer composed by Bishop William E. Lori,
Knights of Columbus Supreme Chaplain
